GIANT PANDA RESERVE

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the research, breeding and conservation of endangered pandas. Founded in 1987 with six rescued pandas, it is now home to over 80. Learn about these magnificent animals from the dedicated keepers. Head to Sanxingui Museum next where many unusual Bronze Age artefacts are on display. This museum was founded to store discoveries from the nearby Sanxingui archaeological site and many of the mythical statues and tools are shrouded in mystery.

HISTORICAL CHENGDU

Founded in 1987 with six rescued pandas, it is now home to over 80. Learn about these magnificent animals from the dedicated keepers. Next, head to Du Fu Cottage, a park and museum that honours the Tang Dynasty Poet Du Fu, who died in the year 770. Explore the beautiful nature that inspired Du Fu and learn some local history and mythology. Next, visit the ancient Wuhou Temple, a picturesque relic with expansive gardens.

HIKING QINGCHENG MOUNTAIN

FULL DAY TOUR WITH LUNCH

Qingcheng Mountain is considered the birthplace of Taoism, and as such is dotted with many unique temples. The UNESCO World Heritage Site has beautiful scenery for hiking and is the perfect place to start the day’s adventure. Explore the natural beauty of the area on foot. Next, visit Dujiangyan, an ancient irrigation system and another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hike along the river discovering traditional structures and temples along the way.

LESHAN GIANT BUDDHA AND MINJIANG RIVER

FULL DAY TOUR WITH LUNCH

Carved out of a riverside cliff almost two thousand years ago, the Leshan Giant Buddha sits within a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Drive 2.5 hours from Chengdu to reach the region, and explore the natural red-earth scenery of the surrounding area. The Buddha itself sits 71 metres high and is nestled in an overgrown nook overlooking the tranquil waters of Minjiang River. Take a short cruise on the river to experience the statue in its full glory then hike through the forest to get a stunning view from up high.

VOLUNTEERING AT DUJIANGYAN PANDA BASE

FULL DAY TOUR WITH LUNCH

The Dujiangyan Panda Base is a non-profit organisation dedicated to rescuing sick and injured pandas from the wild and nursing them back to health. It is possible to volunteer at the base, which includes the opportunity to meet the animals and take photos. Please note spaces are strictly limited and must be confirmed a month prior.

CHENGDU TEMPLES & STREETS

WUHOU TEMPLE, JINLI STREEET, WENSHU BUDDHIST TEMPLE
HALF DAY TOUR WITHOUT LUNCH

Chengdu is home to some beautiful temples and picturesque streets. Start with a trip to the ancient Wuhou Temple and spend some time exploring the many paths that lead from the temple through the expansive forest grounds. Stroll down Old Jinli Street next, discovering markets, local food vendors and ornate textiles for sale. From here, visit Wenshu Buddhist Temple, which dates back to the Tang dynasty. The temple grounds are perfect for exploration, and monuments like the impressible Peace Tower are dotted about the area. Be entertained by live folk music at the Temple’s tea house before concluding the excursion.

EVENING SICHUAN OPERA SHOW

SHOW WITH TRANSFERS

Originating in 1700, Sichuan Opera has a rich historical tradition in China. Experience a contemporary performance and watch dancers, puppets and acrobats in a vibrant 1.5 hour spectacle that includes “changing faces” and “Fire spitting”. Tour includes transport and tickets to the show.
